January- a busy month for Polar Law students
The first month of the second semester has come to a close with several notable events worth mentioning. First, students were engaged in a three week course, The Role of International and Regional Organizations in the Polar Regions (4 ECTS). The course was taught by Program Coordinator, Natalia Loukacheva, which gave a very broad and informative overview of the most important polar associations. The course included a mock forum, where students represented an organization during an Arctic policy negotiation.
Secondly, students have been actively engaged as participants and/or organizers of a variety of conferences: the Arctic Frontiers Conference in Tromso, Norway (January 18-23); Security Prospects in the High North: Geostrategic Thaw or Freeze? in Reykjavik, Iceland (January 29-30); and the Jokkmokk Winter Conference in Jokkmokk, Sweden (February 1-4).
The class was also greeted by two specials guests. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Greenland, Mr. Inuuteq Holm Olse presented to the class about current political issues in Greenland, while Mr. Ragnar Baldursson, Senior Arctic Official for the Government of Iceland gave a detailed lecture on Iceland's current initiatives in the Arctic.
February also looks promising, with new courses and new conferences awaiting.
