Accordingly, the two days Policy Conference which followed the motto “the Age of the Arctic”compiled current opportunities and challenges as regards to the Arctic, ranging from the recently issued Arctic strategy of the European Union to the Arctic strategies of Arctic states and non-state actors. The conference, furthermore, clearly focussed on Arctic Ocean affairs and governance. Most state representatives re-emphasized that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) “provides a solid foundation for responsible management” and that they “therefore see no need to develop a new comprehensive international legal regime to govern the Arctic Ocean”. However, in this context the WWF introduced a recent study on “International Governance and Regulation of the Marine Arctic” which provides an interesting overview and gap analysis on these matters. In the frame of Arctic seas management, several Arctic actors, like StatoilHydro Norway, Shtokman Development AG, Russia or the DG Environment of the European Commission presented their management approaches of the Arctic seas, while the ecosystem-based approach to oceans management in the Arctic stand in the focus of governmental and academic representatives of four Arctic coastal states, Canada, Norway, Russia and the United States.
